SWS Founder Quoted In USA Today

 1CONNECTTWEETLINKEDINCOMMENTEMAILMORE
April 2nd, 2016:
While police officers have body armor and fire arms, communication may be their most powerful asset. A senior officer recently said he'd like to think that his relationships with members of the community would prompt 9-1-1 calls or physical assistance if he was in trouble or getting "his behind whipped" by a suspect.
The importance of community policing isn't just feel-good psycho-babble. Those relationships could mean the difference between an officer working a beat in which he feels appreciated or a beat in which he feels like everyone has their crosshairs trained on him.
I'd ask fellow urban stakeholders to pretend for a moment that their color is blue. Inner-city duty means a sea of camera phones and witnesses loudly proclaiming that an officer has used undue force in their community. Those officers risk—depending on the political climate within their departments—their careers going up in smoke or becoming the latest poster boy for police brutality. Racial profiling is horrible. But imagine the weight of prejudice based upon the color of your uniform. It's possible that both police officers and urban stakeholders feel discriminated against. Our clashes make headlines and sometimes they force police departments to rethink their purpose and change their policies. Officers and the people they serve have every good reason to cultivate relationships. They have no good reason to avoid them.

NO on the Public Safety Tax Increase

Much as I'd love to further impoverish urban New Orleans by voting for yet another sales tax increase ( notice the sarcasm, lol ), watching the overly-protected French Quarter and Magazine St. reap the benefits isn't feasible. Supporting NOPD and their unions is one thing- which I do.

Voting to support the selective way officers are deployed from on high is another matter entirely.

Urban voters should vote NO to a tax increase they can't afford in order to hire officers who won't be sent to our low income, high crime areas where the absence of blue ( cops ) contributes mightily to these streets running red.

I am, however, open to persuasion from honest brokers supporting the tax hike.

SWS Founder Nominates Our Chaplin

As founder of security Within Self ( SWS ), it gave me GREAT pleasure to recently nominate our chaplin and New Orleans #1 crime fighter & mentor, Bro Al Mims, to be featured in the New Orleans Times Picayunes' new Everyday Heroes feature.

heroes@nola.com is where you can send your nomination of Bro Al Mims, an everyday hero whether he's featured or not.

Here's what I wrote:

Brother Al Mims, Jr., is someone I call " New Orleans number one crime Fighter & mentor, " without an iota of exaggeration.

Since the unsolved murder of his father decades ago, this retired Orleans Parish civil sheriffs deputy, ex-world champion kick boxer and former Louisiana Parole Board member, has relentlessly championed personal responsibility, mentorship and support of law enforcement in places where the lack of such advocacy is a literal matter of life or death.

He attributes " Us-ism " instead of racism as the culprit behind urban crime, family and infrastructure collapse, a very unpopular view in such areas. His house has been fired upon: threats have been made on his life and some community critics market the smear that he advocates on behalf of hostile, outside interests.

Bro Mims has shouldered this burden gracefully and energetically with the help of faith; family and the example set by his recently deceased mother, whom he credits for inspiring him to roll with punches, rhetorical and even literal, in the course of his civic ministry.

Having known him for a few years, I'm struck by his daily battle to uplift people and as such, chose him to be the chaplin for SWS, my organization. This choice was based upon his being a figurative father & brother to those he serves!

Mention his name and it becomes obvious that if ever there were an everyday hero in New Orleans, it's Bro. Al  Mims, happy warrior in somber times.

Hostages That Fight Back Show!

New Orleans Talk Network is an internet station where myself and our #1 crimefighter/mentor/and spiritual man Bro Al Mims have appeared as guests and lately, guest hosts of a program, A Moment in Time.

We've been offered our own show, Hostages That Fight Back, debuting Wednesday, March 30th, at 10am Central.

Our format slightly differs from most urban content when it comes to civil rights. While sharing mainstream civil rights concerns, our definition includes blue rights ( civil rights of police ); safety rights ( the right of self-defense & unique challenges facing inner citizens who do so ); and parental rights to discipline disobedient children, currently weakened by external interests and theories from outside our community.

We support personal responsibility as inner citizens chief change agent and public accountability from government entities who frankly forget they answer to Black folks too!

While non-partisan, our old school philosophy places community-and national-interests before partisanship. Since one of us is a Democrat and the other a Republican, we promise alot of pugilistic political commentary!

Hostages that Fight Back airs Wednesdays at 10am Central on the New Orleans Talk Network. Join the spirited conversation by calling 504 341-8255.
