JPSO Deputies Shoot at Escapee in New Orleans!

Jefferson Parish( LA ) inmate Domonique Battle is a lucky man. He wasn't hit by deputies fire in a recent failed escape attempt in New Orleans.

Since this is the second Jefferson Parish Sheriffs Office ( JPSO ) officer-involved shooting in our jurisdiction within scant weeks time, questions, legitimate and otherwise, will be raised.

Chief among them will be, does state law allow Louisiana police officers to use deadly force to apprehend escapees from their custody?

Here's my take on the matter: both the inmate and deputy whose Taser he stole happened to be Black. " What does race have to do with it?" some may ask. As inevitable racism allegations are hurled in JPSO's direction, please consider: the inmate didn't see a " sister " in the ethnic sense when he attacked her; nor the adult child of Black parents; not a possible wife/significant other to a Black man nor mother of Black children. He saw blue, as in police officer, and assaulted her.

Had he successfully gotten her fire arm, headlines could've heralded the shooting of the deputy and her partner!!!

Being a Black police officer doesn't promise criminals sharing your ethnicity-not ethics!-will show any mercy.

As our activists turn up the volume, is it too much to ask recognition that this Black on Black crime; male on female crime was largely a Black on Blue ( police ) one too?

The Old School Referees Urban Apocalypse.

As an old school brother, I'd like to comfort other old school brothers and sisters opposing toxic trends within our community and elsewhere.

We who practice grassroots prevention and protection inherited a moral purpose from long forgotten forebears. Negative culture is a whirl pool sucking our youth and institutions down to oblivion.

We are the ones holding on to them with every fiber of our being. Overshadowed by outside non-profits, ignored by politicians afraid of independent advocates and facing daily rage and ruin, old school brothers and sisters referee an urban apocalypse for no other reason than it's the right thing to do. Amen... and thank you for being old school. :).

Questioning The Public Integrity Bureau Chief's Integrity.

Recent comments by NOPD's deputy superintendent of its Public Integrity Bureau have led to resignation calls from the local Fraternal Order of Police ( FOP ) chapter and the Police Association of New Orleans ( PANO )- two groups I support.

At issue is her community meeting statement about how she would have arrested NOPD officers " on the spot " had they been Jefferson Parish Sheriffs Office ( JPSO ) deputies involved in a fatal shooting in New Orleans.

Her words did not comfort NOPD officers expecting at least the semblance of impartiality from her office. Group bias is a very broad brush, one which can limit life chances and destroy careers.

Limited life chances and career destruction are brutal, whether one's skin tone is black or uniform color is blue.

I wish a concern for blue rights, civil liberties for police officers, had informed her commentary. A curt, " no comment " would have avoided this ordeal since an active investigation is underway.

Perhaps she was trying to comfort the suspect's grieving mother and show a skeptical crowd NOPD thinks Black Lives Matter, to borrow a popular slogan?

Speculation aside, the deputy superintendent may have given her retention-challenged department yet another reason for folks to seek bluer pastures elsewhere.

Another wedge has landed between the police, their command structure and a hostage public- one which New Orleans can ill afford.

It seems the integrity of the Public Integrity Bureau chief is being questioned.

I'm curious what answers will emerge. This promises to be interesting.

It's already disturbing.

Dangerously Bent Pole In Central City

SWS Chaplin Bro Al Mims noticed this dangerously leaning wooden power pole yesterday, on the medium at Jackson Ave & Simon Bolivar-a busy intersection- in New Orleans besieged Central City area.
SWS Founder Cap Black took this pic & sent it out to the powers-that-be!. Several trucks from the power company Entergy were on site this morning and matter should be resolved within a few weeks.

Missou Musings

Conservatives-and some offended liberals-have been quick to condemn the spate of protests on the campus of Missouri's flagship university.

As a former campus activist, I both empathize with their grievances, while also wincing at some of their tactics.

Today's twenty-somethings are different from we of  Generation X vintage. Their style is far more aggressive and willingness to overwhelm compliant dissenters and even cautious authorities is well documented.

It's no secret that America is in a state of severe flux, where few know exactly where her cultural ship of state is headed.

Now is the time for statesmen ( and women ) in the Black community to step forward and help angry youth when it seems their anger is headed toward potential reefs sharp with police confrontation and public outcry.

On the upside, I think those outside our community now see what we deal with on a daily basis, when viral camera phone footage nor network news crews aren't around.

The day of the quiet young Black protester appear gone forever.
