Conservatives-and some offended liberals-have been quick to condemn the spate of protests on the campus of Missouri's flagship university.  

As a former campus activist, I both empathize with their grievances, while also wincing at some of their tactics.

Today's twenty-somethings are different from we of  Generation X vintage. Their style is far more aggressive and willingness to overwhelm compliant dissenters and even cautious authorities is well documented.

 

It's no secret that America is in a state of severe flux, where few know exactly where her cultural ship of state is headed.

Now is the time for statesmen ( and women ) in the Black community to step forward and help angry youth when it seems their anger is headed toward potential reefs sharp with police confrontation and public outcry.

On the upside, I think those outside our community now see what we deal with on a daily basis, when viral camera phone footage nor network news crews aren't around. 

The day of the quiet young Black protester appear gone forever.

Gentrified Justice?

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Yesterday, I watched with disappointment and no small measure of outrage as US Attorney Kenneth Polite promised potential federal charges against robbers attacking Uptown businesses.

While not a fan of armed robbers, I'm also not fond of selective enforcement.

The overwhelming majority of New Orleans violent crime and homicide victims are low income Black citizens, often in areas like Central City and New Orleans East.

I'd like to hope their much more frequently impacted lives merit FBI, ATFE, US Marshals Service and other DOJ component attention too.  

Real or perceived " gentrified justice " gives rise to responses like Black Lives Matter and profound hostility toward law enforcement in communities like those Mr. Polite and I grew up in.

A federal role in violence prevention seems better directed in low income areas most affected.

Perhaps federal enhancements for organized violent crime committed against ANY New Orleanian might be a more just response from local representatives of the US Justice Department?

SWS Statement of Support for Susan Hutson, New Orleans Independent Police Monitor

 

New Orleans Inspector General intends to fire our heroic Independent Police Monitor Susan Hutson and relegate officer-involved shootings of Black citizens to the bad old days of unchallenged ( and unconvincing ) " investigation " by the Public Ignoring Bureau ( PIB ), officially entitled, the Public Integrity Bureau.

Myself and fellow members of SWS: Security Within SELF, a Black male crime prevention and mentoring organization, consider this an act of war against Ms. Hutson, the Black community in particular and civilian oversight of police generally. 

Calling this grave matter breathtakingly racist would be kind.

Making #BlackLivesMatter

21st Century Race & Responsibility

Today's double murder of a White female reporter and a cameraman underscore the sometimes-deadly dynamics of race and responsibility in the 21st Century.

Despite a bi-racial president who fancied himself a racial unifier, it's clear noteworthy percentages in my Generation X and Millennials are anything but unity-minded regarding race, For decades I've told White peers that after my generation there would be no diplomats brokering domestic détente. The contemporary continuum of conflict since the Michael Brown riots and advent of the Black Lives Matter disruption protest movement bear brutal witness to this warning.

Black people no longer reliably suffer in silence as a form of appeasement to heavily armed guardians of a status quo we did not create. This by no means discounts the epic progress of the Civil Rights era. As a direct beneficiary, I would never proverbially spit in the sainted faces of giants like Charles Hamilton Houston and his Howard University Law School student, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

Today's case of Vester Flanagan reinforces the end of diplomacy as an accepted Black norm in the face of real or perceived disrespect. Reinforcing respect is a foundational ethic of my free security activism and its organizational expression, SWS: Security Within SELF. We know only too well the excesses which lack of respect can sanction within some aggrieved souls.

Critics may wag bony fingers and spin the above as sanctioning the targeted assassination of White people. Since I don't possess the mindset for such behavior, their wagging is in vain.

My point is offering a frank assessment of the state of 21st Century race and responsibility. I and my brothers have been street referees between the Black and White scorpions in the bottle called America. We've supported claims of racial bias against Blacks and opposed acts of crime against Whites.

It seems this street referee role may be gaining new urgency as today attests.

Only time will tell where the issue of 21st Century race and responsibility is headed, but I must confess it doesn't look good.
